As Cameroon enters the 21st century, its state or public universities are playing an increasingly important role in the country's development. The list of state universities in Cameroon can be divided into six main categories: universities with a general focus, universities with a technical focus, universities with a medical focus, universities with an agricultural focus, and universities with a business focus.
The universities with a general focus offer undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in a wide range of disciplines, while the universities with a technical focus specialize in various areas of technology. The universities with a medical focus offer programmes in medicine, nursing, and health sciences, while the universities with a agricultural focus offer programmes in

1) University of Buea
University of Buea is located in Molyko, Buea, in the southwest region of Cameroon. It was founded as a university center in 1985 and became a full-fledged university in 1992, following a government decree that re-organized state universities in the country.

3) University of Douala
University of Douala, or Université de Douala, is located in Douala in Cameroon. The University of Douala is one of the eight public universities of Cameroon founded in 1977.
4)University of Dschang
The University of Dschang is located in the town of Dschang, West Cameroon, about 425 kilometers northwest of Yaoundé. It has its roots in three agricultural training schools, and evolved from an agricultural institution to a university in 1993.

University of Maroua or Université de Maroua is located in Maroua, Cameroon. It was established in 2008.

6) University of Ngaoundere
The University of Ngaoundéré is a public university located in Ngaoundéré, Adamawa Region in Cameroon. It was established on 19 January 1993 by Presidential decree.
7) University of Yaounde 1
The University of Yaoundé I is a public university in Cameroon, located in the capital Yaoundé. It was formed in 1993 following a university reform that split the country's oldest university, the University of Yaoundé, into two separate entities: the University of Yaoundé I and the University of Yaoundé II.
8) University of Yaoundé II
The University of Yaoundé II is a public university in Cameroon, located in the capital Yaoundé. It was formed in 1993 following a university reform that split the country's oldest university, the University of Yaoundé, into two separate entities: the University of Yaoundé I and the University of Yaoundé II.
