CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION
  1. Background to the study
Internship is the period during which a student or new graduate gets practical experience in a particular field of his or her studies. The intern carried out this internship which is part of the requirements for an award of a B.Sc. Degree in Management followed by other purposes like blending theory with practice .because of these; I was privileged to be an intern in Ashong Cooperative Credit Union Limited (ASHCCUL) at Mutengene for a period of two months. The internship began on the 16th of June to the 16th of August 2019 and was guide by a field supervisor.

DEFINITION OF INTERNSHIP
Internship is an opportunity to integrate career related experience into an undergraduate education by participation in a planned and supervised work. Internship also provides real world experience to those looking to explore or gain the relevant knowledge and skills required to enter into a particular career. Internship is relatively short term in nature with the primary focus on getting someone “on the job training” and taking what is learned in the classroom and applying it to the real world. Interns can be high school or University students or even adults interested in carrying out a new career. Many University students do internship to gain relevant experience in a particular career as well as to get exposure to determine if they have genuine interest in the field.

  • To create proper communication of students with job market that is connection with job market.
  • It enable students get acquainted with business practices and procedures used in various organizations.

    1. Importance / Benefit of Internship
Because many employers feel that some students lack the practical experience to excel in the job market, internship has become more important than ever before. There are varieties of companies which offer internship to students. An essential problem given by most employers is that graduates do not have the practical skills necessary to excel in the job market.
And they also feel that the professionalism of students is less than it should be. Even though there are large numbers of theories on how to encourage employees and increase profits. It is clear that enhanced levels of education are not enough to prepare students for practical work in the job market. Being able to improve these weaknesses will make graduates much more effective in their careers.
After examining what Internship is all about, it is important to understand what employers want. Many studies have shown that there are six characteristics that employers are looking for. These characteristics are; motivation, Experience, Oral Communication Skills, Interpersonal skills and Leadership. There are number of employees who actually have these skills. It should be note that most employees do not have these trails and they must be taught. When students go through mentoring programs, they must learn to solve problems and communication effectively. It worth nothing that internship is beneficial to the student, the University and the employer.

    1. limitations of Internship

The following difficulties that students and the university face with the internship program are as follows;
  1. Placement problems:With these limitations, most times students find it very hard to get place to do their internship program.
  2. Lack of access to information: this limitation is usually interns of denied access to certain information which is very vital to the objectives of the internship by the employers and this could be for security reasons.
  3. Language problems: this limits internship because with the bilingual nature of Cameroon, many students find it difficult to adapt in zones of different languages.
  4. Sexual harassment:it is the most prominent limitation of internship. Mostly, interns suffer sexual harassment from employers which greatly affect the objective of their internship.
  5. Hatred and jealousy: many interns have faced this issue of hatred and jealousy since internship is evaluation an psychology  of the employers and some employers may develop hatred and jealousy for no justifiable reason for some interns
  6. Pecuniary Aspect: the issue of finance also is a limitation to internship because most students are placed in areas that are far from their residence which need daily transport fare that will run from the time he/ she will complete the internship which is not easily affordable.
